Ghana’s former Second Lady, Samira Bawumia, has been reappointed as a Global Champion by the Clean Cooking Alliance, reaffirming her leading role in advocating for sustainable and safe cooking methods across Africa.
The announcement was made on 7 September 2025 by the Alliance’s Chief Executive, Dymphna van der Lans, who praised Mrs Bawumia’s continued dedication to addressing the health and environmental impacts of traditional cooking practices.
Her reappointment comes amid growing global concern over household air pollution, which affects an estimated 2.3 billion people — with women and children bearing the brunt of exposure to harmful smoke from the use of fuels such as charcoal, firewood and kerosene.
The Clean Cooking Alliance, a global initiative promoting cleaner alternatives, says Bawumia’s work bridges clean energy advocacy with broader goals such as gender equality, climate resilience, and economic development.
Through her foundation, the Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Projects (SEHP), and initiatives like the African Women and Children Conference, Mrs Bawumia has fostered dialogue on sustainable development and advanced women’s empowerment across the continent.
Her renewed mandate as Global Champion signals a push for greater integration of clean cooking into national policies, improved donor alignment, and increased private sector involvement — particularly in scaling female-led innovations.
“Clean cooking is not just a health issue — it’s about equity, economic opportunity, and environmental justice,” Mrs Bawumia said in a statement following the announcement.
In her role, she is expected to use her platform to rally governments, mobilise investment, and accelerate the adoption of clean cooking technologies both in Ghana and across Africa.
